Mexicans

Hola and fck u too mi hermano!

This city needs Mexicans because without this voluntary slave class (note: NOT a prescription but a description, i.e. a fact; slave wages and slave responsibilities--i feel bad for them and their current station sometimes), no one else will do their job (i.e. delivering food, cleaning the tables, selling cheap flowers, etc). But god, many of them are frckn dense. What's worse is that their ancestors built the Mayan Pyramids, Palenque, and Macchu Pichu (Peruvian... same thing). How great the fall! It's a shame. Montezuma must be rolling in his grave.

I was hungry in the morning and was in a mood for a hot dog. I wanted to go to Gray's Papayas or Nathan's on 14th St. But figured that the $12 round trip in a cab wasn't worth it. So, I decided on 2nd Ave. Deli (on 33rd and 3rd Ave.) which is 3 blocks from me.

It's where I get my $16 pastrami sandwich. Despite the price, which is double the regular kosher deli prices, I simply love their pastrami. So, I get it once a week anyway. Afterall, I don't do Daniel or Nobu every week so hey.

I asked for a hot dog with everything on it (naturally, $4, fckn rip off prices. Even the hot dog in Loew's movie theater is cheaper. Note: I'm what you call pound foolish, penny wise. Jacket $1,000? What a bargain! Hot dog $4? Fck u! :) and a quarter pound of chopped liver to go (for breakfast). Next thing I see as I peer through the glass counter is this 4'11" Mexican boy heaping a hay full of sauerkraut. I said to him. "Please, not so much." So, he shaves it off completely. No sauerkraut. Then after that I peer again, ketchup. The entire hot dog was completely drenched in ketchup. So, I screamed.. "too much!"

I was thinking to myself. First off, why are these Mexicans so fckn stupid. Second, why are they so fckn short?! I mean, I'm not a tall guy. I'm average Korean size 5'8"[I'm Short]. But I think a man should be no shorter than 5'5"... in my opinion. Otherwise, one is not human species but a dwarf species.

Anyway, this guy couldn't even make a hot dog! Then of course, I heard him whisper something "chino" to his Mexican buddy next to him. Probably some slander. I try not to complain with low level people because they can NEVER take a criticism or a correction because they take it personally vs. oh, the customer is saying something to me and I need to be more attentive.

Again, how did these people build the fckn pyramids?! [Btw, I climbed Chichen Itza a few years ago and I tried to squeeze my credit card through one of the 10 ton block crevices and it wouldn't fit. That's how precisely engineered it was!] What the hell happened to these people?!

eh. I don't know what to say about this post. Very um, controversial?! I have a feeling it will be deleted before the end of this day.
Too much sauerkraut is nothing to pout about...

haha

If their ancestors built the Mayan Pyramids (unless, aliens actually did.. ala Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull), they should at least be able to make a proper hot dog.

If one can't make a hot dog, there is no way that they will ever be able to space travel :)!

I dont know if it's wise to write something about that... and blame it on Mexicans...

Do you think it's right to call them a "slave class," was wise? Mexicans aren't meant to do your petty chores. C'mon just because you had too much sauerkraut :-/

Jerlyn,

Wise... hmm. You seem wise. What is wise? That was one of your points. I want to learn. Pray tell me. I want to be a nice guy all of the time and never be peeved or angry. Especially with something so negligble and frivilous like too much or too little sauekraut. Afterall, it's making mountains out of mole hills and it's crazy, yes?

Btw, if you don't mind me asking, how do I know you? Curious. Thank you.

Jerlyn is Johannas friend and she is very wise indeed it seems...!

I apologize for writing a book but I guess I will be clearer: I am Johanna's friend. I wandered over to your blog from her friend's list and came to yours. I didn't mean any disrespect but it's quite annoying when people I assume are intelligent perceive very prejudicial ideology. I definitely do not perceive Mexicans as a "slave class." Frankly, there shouldn't be any ethnic groups classified as a slave class. I am not even Mexican however I am aware that there are a great deal of them that have jobs in the government - and I'm certain a position such as yours (whatever you do). From your post, I assume you aren't very pleasant to people because how can you compare an entire group of them who supposedly built the Mayan Pyramids to someone who is just trying to get by who happens to be making your hotdog (thousands of years later because they had an unfortunate life experience). I am aware we can say the same about Africans who made the Pyramids in Egypt with your opinions but I can argue that there are many Africans who are also in high positions. All I am saying is that you can't generalize Mexicans. Alot of our daily miscommunication do come from language barriers, I hope you become aware of that. Your generalization seemed unwise because it made you appear somewhat racist/prejudice & ignorant especially in this post... since I randomly found it. Mexicans aren't the only people who "deliver food, clean the tables, sell cheap flowers, etc" <-- actually I see a lot more Asian ethnic groups doing this (like selling flowers, dvds, etc) from where I am located in NYC. Also, something to think about: Some immigrants leave their countries with amazing professions and they get to the U. S. and they have to get by doing jobs that snooty Americans won't do or think is beneath them because they do not have required documentation.

Not only that: You attacked his height... I actually think being your 5' 8" is short for a guy (although it's supposed to be average). However, I wont attack yours because I know this is all based on genetics. Also he didn't speak "chino," he spoke Spanish. :-).

Anyway, back to sauerkraut: Do you think maybe he didn't understand your accent?

Again sorry for this being long but food for thought: There are over 45 ethnic groups in Mexico, I highly doubt you encountered a Mayan at your hotdog stand because the first Mexicans here are located in where we call New Mexico & Texas. There are also neighboring areas within Mexico with indigenous people who aren't Mayan.

I dunno maybe it's just me or you just seemed very pompous, arrogant, ignorant, snooty and uneducated by the post... therefore not a nice guy as you said you're trying to be :-). I simple pointed this out so you can work on it.

I do apologize for my hate blog BUT the emotion of hate is a part of me and I want to express it on my blog.

Is it wise to do so? The ready answer is NO. It's ugly, intolerant, and weak. It's definitely not nice nor wise per se. To think it is one thing but to express it in public is indeed probably foolish...not wise.

But you know, I am a duality. I love and I hate, I am nice and I am mean, a Yin and Yang thing.

The purpose of my blog is for me to look back on my life and reflect on what I did and felt. My audience is secondary. Important but secondary.

Just as I love seeing beautiful art like Turner, Fraggonard, Ingres, Manet, Matisse, etc. I also appreciate what one may call not so pretty art like Francis Bacon and Jackson Pollack. Just as I love listening to a Mozart concertos, Bizet, or Strauss, I also like to listen to Nine Inch Nails and industrial music.

Similarly, again, "In me are heaven and hell" and I am both.

My blogs will reflect that. Sorry if I offend some people sometimes but I am what I am.

Great capacity for love but also great capacity for hate. Flawed in many ways. An angel and a demon. Human, all too human.

But yes, to love is more noble and wise; to hate is ugly and small. Hate makes the world a misery when it can be beautiful with love and understanding. I understand that. But a 3 dimensional person has a shadow too. Like it or not.

The scariest ones are the silent monsters. Quiet but complicit in evil.

So Jeryln, your point is taken.

Jeryln,

I just read your comment after I posted my comment in response to Barbie's.

So, here's a further comment (in direct response toyour second comment).

#1. I do not have an accent. My diction and vocabulary is exceptional. Not a boast but a fact; #2. I didnt say he spoke Chino. He said "Chino"... as in that Chinese guy (I thought HE was actually being rascist by lumping all Asians as Chinese). Btw, because someone is Mexican does not mean that they are incapable of rascism; #3. I dont like your holier than thou don't be mean speech; #4. Yeah, those Chinese people selling pirated DVDs etc. in Chinatown, thats a fair counter comment; #5. I shouldn't generalize. Fine. But I will again.

Net net, the guy couldn't even put condiments on a hot dog right. If you, as a graphic designer, couldnt spell correctly or kept getting the color coordinations wrong and the errors kept going on a client's website and had to be taken off corected on a regular basis, would I as your hypothetical employer be happy about it? All that I ask is that people who do their jobs do it right and have some pride in it and do their best.

This guy who works in a deli couldnt even speak English nor did he try. Nor did he know anything about customer service. Like a simple "Hello" and "Thank You." Instead, when I said something, he took it as who is this Chino barking and dumped the bag on the counter. Is that good customer service? Is he doing his job?

Now, back to Mexicans, I met a few who are very hard workers and very good. But statistically, thats been more of an exception than the rule and exceptions dont make it a rule.

I have lived in Manhattan for 22 years (went to Stuyvesant HS, the hardest HS in NYC to get into then Columbia BA/MBA.. Btw, where did you go to school?) So, I have interacted with many races and I think every race has something that I admire. Like one of my best friends who is black. I actually almost envy him. He's tall, good looking, dresses to perfection, Valedictorian at CUNY then a Marshall Scholar at Cambridge University. He's the only person (white, black, yellow, etc.) that I know of who has read the entire dialogues of Plato and can synopse them by chronological order or by theme. He is well achieved and also one of the nicest people who I know. And, I have met many other black people (muslims, Indians, etc.), very highly educated and look great.

But never met any Mexicans at this level nor profundity of talent. Often, statistics do impute some reasonable generalizations.

And finally, it's my god damn blog. Don't read it if it's not your cup of tea and please take it easy on the holier than doubt liberal pedestrian speech. It's quite boring and patronizing.

This whole thing reminds me of the time when I went on a blind date with a Jewish girl and somehow the conversation turned to the holocaust and I said to her that Hitler was a monster but I liked the SS uniform and she left. As if just because I liked their uniform that Hitler was not a monster. That was her interpretation.

Puhleez.

Your language barrier comment though I do agree with.

My parents, as immigrants, raised and sent 3 kids to college and grad school working (as owners) of a liquor store.

Their English was horrible. So I'm sure alot of the customers must have thought they were stupid and that hurts. I used to work there to help them out on the cash register so I know.

BUT they always welcomed the customers with a smile, a hello, may I help you, and a thank you.

One does not need to speak perfect English to have manners and provide good customer service. It's just common decency and good business. Something to be proud of even in hardship and slave like conditions.

Jerlyn said...

Oh dear, I must have truly angered you. For this, I apologize. I honestly do not feel the need to tell you which school I attended nor I need to go to the level of explaining myself/telling my life story of how exceptional that I am at what I do. I was simply expressing my opinion which I admit we are both entitled to. I just decided to point out that your post made you seem horrible in accordance to tone and your choice of words. You're right "It's ugly, intolerant, and weak." It reminded me of an email I received months ago with someone calling me the "n word" and assuming that I was a "disadvantaged person" because of the color of my skin. She said this without knowing my past or my accomplishments, lifestyle etc. This is the type of intolerance that I do not tolerate but I do attempt to discover why people display such intolerance (calling of names and generalizations). I must say though: everyone has an accent - no matter how exceptional you believe your English is. I grew up with strictly British English and do not frown upon accents, pronunciations or grammar usage amongst people I carry conversations with. You may speak eloquently but you have an accent nonetheless, people would always assume you're from somewhere specific. I also do not think that working at a hot dog stand is "slave-like" either. I've met wonderful people working at them who love what they do, most of them do have a choice - others not so lucky. A great deal of people here do not grow up with certain manners as you have and frankly, living in NYC for these 22 years - you surely shouldn't simply expect everyone to greet you kindly or express gratitude. In the attempts to keep this very short I'll say, that I understand (although not agree) with your point of view, in no way did I expect to anger you but I am certainly happy that it invoked discussion to future understand you (we apparently have seemingly different backgrounds). And, my name is spelt J-e-r-l-y-n, sorry a tiny peeve. I also love Jackson Pollock :-D.

dandyinthecity said...

Btw, I hate to say it but I have NO accent. My diction is impossibly perfect. No affect nor defect.

Impossible right? Try me.

I hope to meet you someday on this.

You are right though, I am arrogant, snobby, vain, and aloof. [Benefits of a classical education with Confuscian ancestory.]

I am quite critical.

Thus, Dandy 90210 Manhattan. But I do have a heart that not only pumps blood but eyes that shed tears of sorrow as I see sufferings. Siddhartha-eque dear.

The less said about this posting, the better. But it is boorish, offensive, ignorant and muddled.
You should be ashamed to have, for whatever reason, written it. But it seems that you are not.

Pierce,

You should know me by now. I can be quite the venomous ass.

The Mexican boy could not even make my hot dog right.

Hola! Que tal? Macchu Pichu and fck you hermano.
