I recently saw some Charles Bell paintings at the Louis K. Meisel gallery on Prince Street, that were quite similar to this one. (Of course, one MIGHT say that all his paintings are similar or alike, but that would probably be ignorance similar to that of those who say that all Vivaldi concerti grossi are alike.)
His painting really do have a great "look", and I think I like them better as the years go by.
The paintings were "paragon" and "Tropic Nights," and both had the slick and shiny surface and bold primary colors that so stand out in his work. Hard to believe he's been dead over ten years!
LORD GORING. You see, Phipps, Fashion is what one wears oneself. What is unfashionable is what other people wear. PHIPPS. Yes, my lord. LORD GORING. Just as vulgarity is simply the conduct of other people. PHIPPS. Yes, my lord. LORD GORING. And falsehoods the truths of other people. PHIPPS. Yes, my lord. LORD GORING. Other people are quite dreadful. The only possible society is oneself.
