Hildegard Knef - Mame

Luv it. Hildegard singing Mame!

Certainly interesting. She seems a bit ill at ease with the English, which I think hurts in such an utterly American song. (But a lot better than in the giddily atrocious "Silk Stockings", a grotesque failed adaptation of the sublime "Ninochka" -- perhaps best known for its ad tag: "Garbo laughs!")

Much better is her "Seerauber Jenny" (Pirate Jenny) also on YouTube -- it would seem from the same concert. Now there (in her more comfortable German) is a nice interpretation.)

I agree and German sounds so good when she sings it. I checked out a dozen or more of her songs on YouTube, all of them were great. Put Mame on because it was abit different than the others and I luv the song.

Hildegard is amazing. What a unique voice and lady. I wonder what her life was like. I don't think that anyone can sing like her unless they've gone through some major hell in their life. Such soul verve and sadness in her voice. Simply divine.

I saw Ute Lemper, Eartha Kitt, and Bobby Short (all separately) singing at the Cafe Carlyle. Hildegard would have blown all of them away!

Are you familiar with the album "Broken English" by Marianne Faithful? (ca. 1978). I think you might like it. It's a far cry from "As Tears go by."
